South Ayrshire Befriending Project (SABP) supports around 60 volunteers each year, many of whom have been with us for years and have befriended more than one young person.
All volunteers are supported by Project Coordinators to fulfil their befriending role through regular reviews, opportunities for additional training, and occasional social evenings. SABP facilitates approximately 6 to 8 support sessions each year, including both social events and training and information sessions. We cover relevant topics such as alcohol and drugs awareness, first aid, young people and mental health, and child protection awareness. Volunteers who wish to do so have been registered with our local Third Sector Interface (VASA) whereby their contribution to volunteering is formally recognised through an award system (SAVA and Saltire). SABP also holds its own annual awards evening every November to give thanks and recognition to the valuable work our volunteers do.
