Established in 1996, South Ayrshire Befriending Project (SABP) provides 1:1 befriending support as well as group activities to around 60 socially isolated and disadvantaged young people aged 8 to 18 years within South Ayrshire each year.
The young people have very limited adult support at home and very limited opportunities for social engagement or friendships. Many live in environments affected by poverty, drugs, alcohol or mental health issues and a significant number are involved in child protection procedures. Increasingly we support young people who are not engaged in education.
The main aim of befriending is to reduce the social isolation of the young people supported, increase their confidence and self esteem and to ensure they are included and feel valued.
"My befriender is really funny. She listens to me"
"I would never have got to go out like I have without G"
"K has given me someone to talk to and I get out the house"
