make a difference to a young persons life

The Buddies Project is a parallel service to the main Project which supports young people aged 11-18 years who are socially isolated as a direct result from having additional support needs arising specifically from a medical diagnosis such as Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, ADHD, Physical disabilities, visual & hearing impairments and learning difficulties.

The role of a Buddy is to provide informal and social support through meeting their young person on a fortnightly basis for a few hours – this can be to go swimming, bowling, out for dinner – many things, with the main focus being on spending 1:1 time and building up a trusting relationship. There may be a particular individual goal stated at the start of the relationship, eg – raising confidence, joining a local group which the Buddy will help the young person work towards and achieve. While the success of the relationship is not dependent on a set goal being achieved, success in that regard is, however, seen to be an additional benefit of befriending.
